Is it safe to unplug an EV during a charging session?

Yes, it’s safe to unplug an EV while it’s charging, but it’s not something we generally recommend unless necessary.

EVs are built with safety systems that stop the flow of electricity before the connector is released, so there’s no danger of electric shock. That said, regularly unplugging mid-session can interrupt Smart Charging and reduce efficiency or savings.

If someone needs to unplug

We recommend tapping “Stop charging” in the app first if the vehicle is charging. This adds an extra layer of protection and ensures the session ends cleanly.

Why it's best to wait

  • The EV may not reach its target charge level

  • They could miss out on low-cost charging periods (especially with Smart Charging)

  • Repeated interruptions may lead to unreliable charging behaviour

In short: it’s safe, but best avoided unless needed. Use the app to stop charging first for peace of mind.
