How to get an export tariff
If you're installing solar for a customer, they may ask how to get paid for the excess energy they send back to the grid. That’s where an export tariff comes in and there are a few key things they (and you) will need.
What your customer needs:
A smart meter capable of tracking exports (SMETS 1 or 2)
An energy supplier that offers an export or SEG tariff (e.g. Octopus, E.ON)
Documents provided by the installer:
An MCS certificate confirming the solar installation is accredited
DNO approval (confirmation that you’ve notified the Distribution Network Operator of the system after a G98/G99)
Once the system is installed and paperwork is in place, the customer should apply directly through an energy supplier’s website. Some suppliers may ask for additional details like MPANs or system capacity.
Once approved, your customer will start receiving payments for the energy they export.
